LIFE/WORK EXPERIENCE
1954 Born on 23rd August in Orumieh, Iran. 1970 Teaches himself photography. 1972 Completes secondary school in Tehran. 1973/74 School teacher in Kurdistan. 1975/78 Studies filmmaking in Rome, Italy. 1978/79 Returns to Iran and covers the political developments and revolution. Starts working with Agence France Presse and several Iranian publications, including Iranweek and Aftab. 1979/85 Correspondent for Sipa Press and Black Star in Iran. 1980/83 On assignment for Newsweek in Iran, hostage story. 1983/85 Correspondent for Time, Life Magazine in Iran. 1985 Correspondent for Keystone Agency, based in Paris. 1986/87 Correspondent for Sipa Press in Los Angeles, USA. 1987/90 Director of the Agence France Presse Photo Department for Central America, based in Costa Rica. 1990/95 Correspondent of Agence France Presse for Northern Africa and the Middle-East, based in Cairo. 1995/96 Director of the Agence France Presse Photo Department for the Middle East, based in Jerusalem. Sept. 1996 Severely wounded whilst covering a confrontation between Israelis and Palestinians in Ramallah, West Bank. Spent the next 18 months rehabilitating in the military hospital Hpital des Invalides in Paris, where he produced a widely publicized photo essay about war veterans. 1998/01 Photographer for Agence France Presse, based in Paris covering national/international news and stories. Feb. 2000 Wounded whilst covering the visit of French Premier, Lionel Jospin, in Ramallah. 2002 Leaves AFP, joins Webistan Photo Agency. 2002-03 Founder and director of AINA Photojournalism Institute, Kabul. Different assignments in Afghanistan.United Nations international monitor for the 2002 Loya Jirga elections. Assignment for National Geographic in Syria. Teacher at World Press Photo Master Class in Amsterdam. 2004 Assignment for National Geographic in Turkey.
